Dipple Symposium: Fluid-rock Interactions: Mineralization of Metal and Carbon

DIPPLE SYMPOSIUM – FRI, NOV 22  |  10*am – 4pm [*updated]
Fluid-rock Interactions: Mineralization of Metal and Carbon

This year, on the day after Open Day, we’re hosting a full-day public symposium to celebrate Greg Dipple’s 30 years of dedication to MDRU research and innovation.

Join our speakers—Simon Peacock, Nick Oliver, Kelly Russell, Ken Hickey, Shaun Barker, Greg Dipple, and Peter Bradshaw—as they discuss important research topics Greg contributed to, including fluid flow in the crust, new tools for exploring for carbonate-hosted ore deposits, and carbon capture in mine tailings.

As MDRU celebrates its 35th anniversary, Greg’s leadership and contributions have been pivotal throughout his career at UBC. The symposium will explore three key themes that highlight Greg’s impact on both science and MDRU:

(1) Fluid flow in the crust in metamorphic environments

(2) Exploration for carbonate-hosted ore deposits

(3) Carbon sequestration in mine tailings

INVITED SPEAKERS AND SCHEDULE

10:00  Welcome [Shaun Barker]

10:05  Pre-Carbon Greg [Kelly Russell]

10:30  Reflections on Greg Dipple’s early contributions as a metamorphic petrologist … before he was exiled [Simon Peacock]

11:00  What Greg worked on for his postdoc: One crazy outcrop in Australia [Nick Oliver]

12:00  Lunch

The day will conclude with a visit to Arca’s lab and offices in Mount Pleasant. Arca, co-founded by Greg to achieve gigaton-scale carbon storage, will host a tour and social gathering.

ARCA LAB TOUR AND SOCIAL  –  5pm

After the Symposium, you are invited to visit Arca’s Lab starting at 5pm.
There is no charge to attend the tour and social. Please indicate if you will be attending on the registration form.
