Learn the practical skills needed to navigate and vector to mineralization within porphyry copper mineralizing environments to help you make your next discovery.

Porphyry copper deposits are a major source of Cu, Mo, Au and Ag and host widely distributed mineralization types at convergent plate boundaries, including skarn and superjacent high- and intermediate-sulfidation epithermal deposits. These deposits define linear belts (>100km) and commonly occur with cluster of stocks or dike bodies above a composite pluton with an alteration footprint of over 5-10km. Understanding metallogenic and ore-genetic processes, alteration and mineralization footprints at various scales, factors influencing enrichment and preservation of these deposits and techniques for targeting are essential for discovery of new resources.

ABOUT THIS 2-DAY COURSE

This two-day course, focused on porphyry Cu-Mo and Cu-Au deposits and aimed at exploration geoscientists and students, provides a practical overview of porphyry deposits emphasizing exploration targeting and includes hands-on exercises using maps and rock samples from selected alkalic and calc-alkalic deposits.

DAY 1

  1. Anatomy of calc alkalic and alkalic porphyry deposits
  2. Exercises: Hands-on-exercise with maps, cross sections and rock samples from selected alkalic and calc alkalic porphyry deposits showing hostrock association, alteration and vein types, and mineralization. Suite of rocks includes samples from: Cerro Colorado (Chile), Reko Diq (Pakistan), El Galeno (Peru), Oyu Tolgoi (Mongolia), Highland Valley (BC), Red Chris (BC), Copper Mountain (BC), and Mount Polley (BC) and examples from a few other sites.

DAY 2

  1. Metallogeny of porphyry deposits
  2. Footprints of porphyry copper deposits
  3. Exercises: Hands-on-exercise with maps, cross sections and rock samples from selected (continue from day 1).
  4. Exercises: Synthetic exploration targeting.
