Metallogeny Of The Golden Triangle – Examining Base Metal VMS, Au-Ag Epithermal, And Cu-Au Porphyry Systems From Exploration To Active Mining Operations

Stewart and Tatogga, BC   |   August 23 to 29, 2025

This field trip will introduce participants to the regional geology of the Stewart Camp and provide an understanding of the Hazelton Group stratigraphy.

This six-day trip will focus on Jurassic and Triassic rocks, which host most of the ore deposits in the Stikine Terrane of northwestern British Columbia. We aim to provide context for the timing of these deposits, from the Late Triassic through the Jurassic, by examining favorable host rocks and depositional environments. These insights can be used to guide exploration at various scales across the Golden Triangle.

Days 1–3:
During the first part of the field trip, based in Stewart, we will visit a series of outcrops along Granduc Road. Excellent exposures along road cuts and logging areas preserve primary volcanic textures. One day will be dedicated to a drill core review of the Treaty Creek Project and other deposit types studied as part of the Golden Triangle Stratigraphy Project—such as the VMS deposits in the Bear Pass area and the epithermal Ag-rich deposits of the Kitsault Valley.

Days 4–6:
The second part of the trip will be based out of Tatogga Lake Resort, located 15 km south of Iskut. We will review drill core from the Eskay Creek Project (owned by Skeena), visit the Red Chris Mine (owned by Newmont), and tour the Iskut Project (owned by Seabridge Gold).

Afternoon/Evening Group Sessions in Stewart:
These sessions will offer geological insights into the regions and mineral deposits visited throughout the trip, including Cu-Au porphyry systems, VMS deposits, and Au- and Ag-rich epithermal mineralization. Participants will examine drill core and hand samples from key deposits, and guest speakers from companies operating in the Stewart Camp will present additional nearby exploration and development projects.

Participants:
The group will primarily consist of professionals from the mining industry, along with five MDRU researchers currently working in the region. All participants should be comfortable in open pits and on uneven terrain, and must bring appropriate boots and outdoor clothing.
